ABOUT ONUR
Turkish born musician received his formal musical training in Izmir-Turkey, Yasar University with Dr. Kürsad Terci and graduated Magna Cum Laude, Bachelors of Music in 2013. In his third year of studies in Yasar University, Onur was awarded a scholarship from Erasmus - lifelong learning program- and studied in Cesare Pollini Conservatory in Italy with Prof. Giovanni Grano in 2012. He studied with Mark Cruz in his Master of Music degree at Texas State University and graduated with high honors in 2015 in the USA. Following the Masters degree, Onur studied with Ernesto Bitetti throughout his doctoral studies at Indiana University.
Onur has graduated D.M.A program from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music at May 2020 with his Lecture Recital titled "A Lecture Recital with a Comprehensive Study on the Contributions to Contemporary Classical Guitar Repertoire by Foreign Classical Guitar Arranger-composers who lived in Turkey and Were Influenced by Turkish Music."
In 2019, Onur was one of the judges for the Indiana International Guitar Competition for Senior and Junior Youth Division.
Onur has been awarded the first prize in the trio section in Brownsville Guitar Competition, Texas in 2014 where his guitar trio has competed with an original composition “Swarm” by Mark Cruz that was composed for them. He was also awarded the second prize in the same competition the following year in the duo section in 2015. Onur was awarded first prize in Yaşar University Chamber Music Competition in his senior year with his guitar quartet in 2011.
As an educator and performer, Onur has worked in many countries, including underdeveloped parts of the Dominican Republic for a workshop with the Cheerful Heart Mission.
In his Doctoral studies Onur performed with various chamber music groups as well as the IU Philharmonic Orchestra in productions, such as: The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs by Mason Bates and The Mass by Leonard Bernstein. In 2022 Onur was invited to perform The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs with the Atlanta Opera, conducted by Michael Christie.
Currently, Dr. Alakavuklar is the Regional Director - Detroit Metropolitan Area for the LeadGuitar and serves as a Faculty at Jackson Symphony Orchestra Community Music School.
